Cucumber Superfood Benefits

The Power of the Mighty Cucumber: Beyond Superfood

Thought you knew the great cucumber well? Think again! The cucumber is not only a nutritional superfood, it is downright magical in its multifunctional self. Here are 14 beneficial uses for cucumbers, and why you will soon consider them an underrated superfood:

  1. Cucumbers contain a large number of vitamins needed every day. A single cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium, and Zinc.
  2. Cucumbers are energizing! No need for a caffeine fix if you have a cucumber hanging around. Since cucumbers are an excellent source of B vitamins, carbohydrates, (approx 7-10) and water, they can provide that a steady energy boost that can last for several hours.
  3. Garden superheroes: A few slices of cucumber in a pie tin can repel common garden pests including grubs and slugs. Cucumbers naturally contain chemicals that are triggered by the metal of the tin, releasing a scent that only pests can smell… and they just don’t like it!
  4. Cucumbers as an anti-fogging device: Rubbing a cucumber slice along your bathroom mirror, will eliminate fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.
  5. Ditch the cellulite and wrinkle cream- rubbing cucumber on cellulite areas and wrinkles for a few minutes triggers your skin’s collagen to tighten and firm up on the outer layer. This greatly reduces the visibility of cellulite and those fine lines without pricey creams and lotions.
  6. Cucumbers act as a headache or hangover cure! Taken as early as possible, cucumbers contain enough hydrating electrolytes, B vitamins, and raw sugar to repopulate the body’s needed nutrients to avoid the dehydration and nutrient loss that causes headaches and hangovers.
  7. Cucumber skin to erase pen marks, crayon and marker! Did the kids write on the living room wall? Break out the outside of a cucumber to erase these marks. Gently rub in circles and watch the magical erasing effect.
  8. Cucumbers as shoe polish and water repellant. As a quick polish fix, rubbing a cucumber on shoes will leave enzymes that can shine them up in a jiff and protect them from light water penetration.
  9. WD 40 replacement: Squeaky door hinge? The enzymes in a cucumber can lubricate a squeaky spring, but the enzymes can also eat away small particles that created the squeak in the first place.
  10. Cucumbers make a great snack! Add a little cilantro, salt, and lime, and you have a ready-made cucumber salad in it’s simplest form.
  11. Spa Cucumber treatment: cut a cucumber into slices and add to boiling water. The chemicals, enzymes and nutrients will release in the steam. Allowing this steam to gently roll over your face (not too close!) is not only great for the health and glow of your skin, but the scent has been shown to trigger stress reducing signals to your brain. Ommmmm.
  12. Cucumbers are better than breath mints! Take a slice of cucumber and hold it to the roof of your mouth for 30 seconds to 1 minute. The phytochemicals in the cucumber will nix bacteria that cause bad breath.
  13. The Cucumber green-clean: Using the end of a cucumber, rub it across surfaces to shine and remove residue. Add a little baking soda for a natural scrub effect and you can remove years of tarnish and grime. Or keep it simple and the cucumber alone will not leave streaks and there will be no need to worry about harsh chemicals that can harm to your skin.
  14. Can’t get enough cucumber magic? The good old fashion under-eye treatment is the last miracle use on our list. The cooling effect of cucumbers can not only de-puff the eyes, but can also lighten dark circles and help with fine lines… in a matter of seconds!
