The hCG diet is a weight loss protocol that has helped thousands of overweight people to lose 1 to 2 lbs per day. A 500 calorie a day diet also known as the VLCD (very low calorie diet) is combined with a minimal intake of hCG for weight loss.
What is hCG?
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone naturally produced by women during pregnancy. This hormone controls metabolic function through the hypothalamus throughout pregnancy. hCG is administered in very high doses for fertility treatments. A variation of hCG is administered in very low doses for weight loss purposes. Whether administered for weight loss or fertility, the hCG which is used for medical purposes is created in a laboratory from sterile cells. It is NOT extracted from women or animal urine – a common misconception.
How much weight will I lose with the hCG diet?
The average loss on the hCG diet is 1 lb per day. Women lose 0.5-0.75 lbs per day on average. Men tend to lose more. Is it healthy to lose 1 to 2 pounds per day with hCG diet injections?
During the hCG diet weight is safely lost from stores of excess fat on the body. As water retention fluctuates daily there is also a component of the water weight loss during the diet. In his original manuscript, Pounds and Inches, Dr. Simeons differentiates between normal (healthy) fat and abnormal (excess) fat. He explains how the hCG Diet is self limiting in that despite a patient’s efforts they cannot lose any more weight than is perfectly healthy for their body.
In Pounds & Inches Dr. Simeons states,” With HCG it is impossible to reduce a patient, however enthusiastic, beyond his normal weight. As soon as no more abnormal fat is being issued, the body starts consuming normal fat, and this is always regained as soon as ordinary feeding is resumed. The patient then finds that the 2-3 lbs. he has lost during the 3-4 last days of treatment are immediately regained.” Dr. Simeons further explains that as soon as a patient begins to burn normal (healthy) fat they will immediately begin to experience intense feelings of hunger indicating that the diet should be concluded, another indication that the diet is self limiting.
